In a significant stride towards sustainability, the Brazilian Association of Aluminium Can Manufacturers (Abralatas) reported a historic achievement in the production of beverage cans in Brazil. According to their Consolidated Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Practices Report for 2022, the industry reached the highest-ever level of recycled aluminium content in beverage cans.
The year 2022 presented a range of challenges for the industry, including a weakening domestic economy and the first decline in sales of aluminium beverage cans in five years. Despite these obstacles, the recycled content of aluminium beverage cans produced in Brazil increased from 77% in 2021 to an impressive 80%.
During the year, per capita consumption stood at 153 beverage cans, equivalent to a total of 31.8 billion units. While some companies like Ball and Canpack temporarily halted or mothballed their domestic production due to fluctuating demand, the market has since stabilized. With the introduction of new canned beverages and the enduring appeal of the sustainability credentials of cans, Abralatas anticipates a return to industry growth in the coming year.
One of the most remarkable milestones of 2022 was Brazil achieving a 100% recycling rate. Abralatas reported that this accomplishment saved 390,000 tons of aluminium scrap and prevented the emissions of 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide.
Brazil's canmaking plants are distributed throughout the country and are supported by 36 can collection centers in 19 of the country's 26 states. Additionally, various waste collectors' cooperatives are actively involved in enhancing recycling efforts.
